Dr. Jasmeet Kaur

I am a Postdoctoral Researcher at CISPA under the supervision of Jane Im. Recently, I completed my PhD from Indraprashtha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi, India, under the supervision of Dr. Pushpendra Singh.

I am an HCI and privacy researcher with a special interest in working for and with marginalised populations. Literature shows how individuals with limited digital literacy, low-income, and limited agency are marginalised, and I believe attending to this group is equally important for ensuring equitable access to digital resources and fostering inclusive social and economic participation. Currently, I examine, design, and build systems to support the privacy needs of marginalised populations in their interactions with Large Language Models.

During my PhD research, I examined reproductive health needs of postpartum women residing in low-resource contexts in India and further designed and evaluated smartphone-based interventions — such as WhatsApp peer-support groups and AI-powered chatbots — to provide private, context-sensitive support around contraception, maternal health, and sexual and reproductive health. My PhD dissertation advances ecological and responsible technology perspectives in HCI4D by reframing digital health tools as socially embedded systems that must align with women’s lived realities in resource-constrained settings.

Usable Privacy & Responsible AI

Design and development of privacy-preserving systems through socio-cultural and value-sensitive lenses, especially for marginalized populations.

Reproductive Health & mHealth

Design, deployment, and evaluation of chatbots and digital peer support interventions for family planning, maternal health, and sexual and reproductive health in rural India.

Technology & Care Infrastructures

Understanding how social settings, household structures, and community dynamics shape engagement with digital health tools, and how technology can scaffold care and support.

    Conducted a three-week WhatsApp-based field study with 30 participants to examine how technology-based peer support addresses family planning needs among rural Indian women.
  • Chatbot for COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy in Low-resource Settings in India (2022).
    Developed, deployed, and evaluated a rule-based WhatsApp chatbot to address COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among pregnant and breastfeeding women; analyzed engagement of over 800 users.
  • Chatbot for Breastfeeding Mothers in Low-resource Settings in India (2018).
    Designed a Hindi-language chatbot to support breastfeeding mothers by addressing breastfeeding-related queries via a mobile application interface.
